A Closer Look at Web Sites Designed for Children

Posted by: amize2 on: September 15, 2009

When looking at the Everythinggirl website it is apparent that the target audience is young(er) children.  The website is a melting pot of related websites.  Some of the links on the main page include:  PollyPocket , Barbie , MyMeebas , and Myscene.  The pink background, which covers EVERY facet of the website, supports the stereotypical female gender association with the color.  The “host” of the site is a guide who is a fairy, leading the visitors of the site to different areas, each with sparkles and magical sounds each time a new area is entered or rolled over.  The site is easy to navigate, complete with pictures and short descriptions.  The site also allows for access to Mattel’s main website, as well as an area to shop for fun toys (the process which is often times initiated by the child, to be completed by the parent).  I think that the multiple links to other Mattel related websites is intended to keep children (specifically girls) on the website for an extended period of time.  During this time, not only are the visitors able to have some fun, but they are subjected to multiple ads regarding Mattel related products, all of which I assume are available at the easily accessed SHOP site located at the top of the page.
